The European Forum for Geography and Statistics (EFGS) is a voluntary body which allows for the exchange of ideas among GIS experts in National Statistical Institutes (NSIs) and National Mapping and Cadastral Agencies (NMCAs) with a view to promoting the integration of statistical and geospatial information. Since 2008 the EFGS have held a two or three day conference on geostatistical topics connected to the European Statistical System and latterly the UN-GGIM initiative.
In recent years the conference has attracted an expanding attendance, with the 2016 conference hosting participants from over 40 countries across all continents.
The main goal of the EFGS is to promote the integration of statistical and geospatial information in public sector information. The forum also acts as a reference group for Eurostat and the project group for the GEOSTAT projects. In October 2015 the EFGS received the status of official Observer Organisation to UN-GGIM: Europe.
The current EFGS work program recognises the creation of a point-based spatial reference framework for official statistics as the base for the collection and dissemination of statistical data, and the development of the partnership between the National Statistical Institutes (NSI) and the National Mapping and Cadastral Agencies (NMCA) on equal terms.
It is presently involved in providing support to Eurostat and NSIs for a fully geocoded 2021 population and housing census, the development of a strategy for cooperation with UN-GGIM: Europe, and to introduce spatial aspects including the grid system into the GSBPM model for modernisation of statistical production and the work on common spatial statistical indicators.
